Can I use Raspberry Pi 3 on R2016a?

A simple question, I noticed R2016b is advertising support for Raspberry Pi 3 Model B. Is this just referring to the availability of the hardware support package? I'm confused because I thought R2016a already had this support... Can the support be added to R2016a by installing the same hardware support package?

Raspberry Pi 3 is supported for MATLAB 2016a. You can find more details and download the support package here:
