Why do I get the message "This installer must be run from disk #1" or "unexpected error" when running the installer?

When I run the installer I receive the following message:
This installer must be run from disk #1. Please insert that disk and try again.

This can occur when the installation files included with the setup.exe in the installer have become corrupt. To resolve this, create a new folder and move the installer.exe and all product .zip files into the new folder, then double click the installer.
If you're installing from a DVD, it means you probably have a damaged DVD. Request a new DVD or try installing from download instead.
If you're installing an older MATLAB release from multiple CDs, make sure you are running the installer from the first installation CD.
