Hello Andrea,
There is a very big difference between how you can work with MATLAB on a computer, and how you can work with it with a tablet or phone. On a computer (desktop, laptop, notebook), you can install MATLAB locally. It will contain all the libraries and files necessary to run, and can be used without internet (once installed and activated). All features for the toolboxes you own will be usable from your system, including some of the Windows-specific features (e.g. COM integration).
On a mobile device (tablet, phone, etc.), you can install the MATLAB Mobile app. This requires connection to either a cloud-based or computer-run session of MATLAB, meaning you need internet access to use it. All computation is done in the connected MATLAB session, not on your mobile device. This means that it will take less memory and processing power, but it will also be significantly slower (at least for some operations that require a lot of data to go back and forth). There are also several built-in apps and features that are not yet supported by MATLAB Mobile (see the "Limitations" section on the page I linked).
I hope this helps you make your decision.

Since iPad Pro is basically more powerful that some laptops around why not have a full matlab version that runs natively on the iPad ... it would make our life so much easier...
I agree with Mark! We need a independent matlab app for iPad please.
I agree! Please we need a full app for iPad.
I would not expect an iPad version of MATLAB any time soon.
  • The iPad does not use an Intel CPU
  • iOS does not support Java, which is required for much of MATLAB's desktop interface, and underlies "traditional" figures (but not the newer "uifigures")
  • iOS's UI is different internally, built for touch and not for cursor; it is not clear how much work it would be to adapt. In any case it would mean coding a new UI
  • The newest iPad Pro has 6 Gigabytes of RAM; older ones had less. Current releases of MATLAB say 4 Gigabytes minimum, 8+ recommended for Simulink. So although MATLAB would fit, there is not a lot of room for expansion, and people are likely to run out of memory on modern problems
Who would pay for the cost of the port ? Is there a large market compared to other things that Mathworks could do instead?
There is an estimate that Apple accounts for about 15% of the Mathworks market. The implication from the sales figures is that iPad support could be expected to max out at maybe 5% of Mathworks market. Is that realistically worth the cost of development?
:( in the same dilemma at the moment.
Sadly, Mathworks had to remove GPU support on Mac for newer versions, because Nvidia stopped Apple support (because Apple obstructed approval of new device drivers.)
Apple will be putting out a non-Intel MacBook later this year and getting off x64 architecture more and more the next several years. Perhaps at some point the iPad and new systems will be close enough that the translation technologies will work for MATLAB. I would not count on it though.
Very useful information sir Walter!
Hello, currently I use my ipad pro (M1) with 8Gb Ram to virtualize a very ligthweith linux version (Lubuntu) with matlab installed (UTM Virtual app for IOS). Runs great, usually I just run matlab with -njv -nodesktop and use sublime-text as editor. I like to code or write new codes ideas/project literally everywere, so my ipad with a very thin case+keyboard is the best option for me, literally i just read a paper on the ipad and write a code for an image that i like....best regards

The basic difference is you can use MATLAB on a mobile device or iPad by installing the MATLAB Mobile app. This requires a connection to either a cloud-based or computer-run session of MATLAB, That means you need internet access to use it and the important thing is all computation is done in the connected MATLAB session, not on your mobile device. for Apple devices you need to be careful otherwise you can get an Error 0xe8000015 as i got an iTunes Error 0xe8000015
