poor quality of matlab gui

i am using matlab r2016a on ubuntu 17.04, and i am observing a poor quality of gui elements like fonts, buttons, windows etc. matlab says, it is using opengl. i launch matlab from the terminal.
how do i improve the quality, i have all the drivers updated already.
pc specs:
intel core i3 4010u 1.7ghz
ram: 4 gb
intel hd graphics
amd radeon hd 8670m 1 gb (dedicated graphics)
ubuntu 17.04
wd 500 gb HDD

I guess you need to define "poor". Poor compared to what?

Do you have a high-DPI display, above 96 dots per inch? Does the problem have to do with some parts being too small to be easily read?
