If you're a student, you may be eligible to purchase the MATLAB and Simulink Student Version, http://www.mathworks.com/academia/student_version/ .

True, but if you need a particular older version then you are going to need to know how to get to it on the Mathworks site, and that's what this Question is about.

EDIT: Updated instructions as of 29-Sep-2016
  • Log in to your Mathworks account
  • In the upper-right corner, you will see your account name, with a little pull-down arrow
  • Click on that arrow
  • Select "My Account"
  • You should see a list of "My Software", with a download icon next to each license. Click on the icon for the appropriate license.
  • Choose from "Download Earlier Release" from the right-hand column

You should probably contact Mathworks for installation support.

Hello it is still not possible, it's like MATLAB forces you to download only the current release not any other release, thats a big turn off..

Hello Andreas, i am an undergraduate student in my final year of schooling but on attachment/internship at the National Met office in my country. Thus i am using this trial version to try and compile something but it is not working as i had seen the R2017b working once on a collegues laptop, even my IT can not help, they tried. So please do assist me becuase i need to download and install and use R2017b then later buy it. Thanx in advance.

You need to contact Mathworks Sales to obtain a trial version for an older release. Trial users cannot download older releases.
If you post more information about the problems you have in compiling, it is possible that someone will have some ideas as to what the cause is.
Note: You would need to be using a Commercial / Professional ("Standard") license while working at National Met.

The solution to this is even easier:
  1. When logged into your MathWorks Account, click Download the latest release
  2. On the new tab, it says Click here to download any MathWorks release
  3. There's a scroll menu to the right with every release
I have about 5 versions with my student license. There are generally very few forwards compatibility issues but once you use contributed code on the web, I think it's best practice to use the version it was created with.

You would have to click on "Get MATLAB" near the upper right corner.
