Cannot create or open .m files in Matlab UI.

I've been using Matlab R2023b in my Lenovo Laptop running Linux Kubuntu 24.04 kernel 6.8.0-58-generic (64 bit) for about a year now without problems. A couple of weeks ago I noticed that when I try to open an existing .m file by double clicking on it under "Current Folder" on the left of the Matlab UI, or create a new script (not live script) by clicking the "New Script" button located on the top left of the Matlab UI, I get the following message:
"Unable to open this file in the current system configuration. For more information, see Requirements.".
I have not changed any Matlab configuration since I installed it on this laptop about a year ago. Also, when I click on the link under "Requirements" a new window opens but no text is shown, so I don't know what I'm supposed to do to fix this.
Can you please help me solve this problem?
Thanks!
Kind regards,
Dr. Sandra Carral.

I doubt any of us on Answers will be able to help you with this.
Did your Linux distro update without your knowledge? Do you have all the updates to R2023b downloaded and installed?

I'm learning Linux, getting away from Windows 11 and all its bloatware, instability. and other problems.
How did you arrive at this solution? (It looks like the one in this Answer, referred to in Walter's Comment above. If it is, a Vote for that Answer would be appropriate.)
