I am interested in getting Matlab, however, my institution is a not for profit organization working in the field of marine conservation and I do not know which product is suitable for our research as an NGO as the products offered are for either governmental/commercial, or academia, and is quite expensive. I want to use it to analyse my acoustic data and model habitat suitability. Can I use the student/home license for my research work? Please help.

The best way to know is by contacting the sales directly, say it is a nonprofit NGO and for research. They might offer you either academic license, which have quite a discount or might offer you a discounted version of commercial price. Here is a link for communicationg

"I'm yet to recieve a response."
Yes, but as of this point, you sent a message to sales between 1 and 3 hours ago, and before any of them probably started work. Surely you could give them a chance to respond. Even sales people deserve a life, breakfast to make and eat, kids to get to school. :)

You cannot use a Student license or a Home license for your research work.
Officially you will need to get a Standard license (or just maybe a Startup license.)
