I never bother to even make an attempt for questions like this one. I have no idea what the background is of the person asking for an explanation, so I have no idea whether a satisfactory answer would take 3 lines or 3 complete textbooks.

When people ask for an explanation, they should always be fairly specific about what they are asking to have explained, indicating the parts they believe they already understand, and pointing out the parts that confuse them.
