Number of matlab running

Hello,

I am currently using matlab 2011b, and I have a lots of matlab functions to run with big running time (from 4/5 hours up to many days).

My problem is that i can only run 4 matlab at a given time (I don't use the gui, only the command line), and when i launch a fifth one, an other stop without warning.

So is there really a limit of 4 matlab running at the same time or I made some mistakes ?

If there is a limit, can we go beyond this limit ?

Are you using a node-locked license (typical) or a networked license (not uncommon in larger organizations) ?

I think, it is a node-locked license but i am not sure.

And even if it is a networked license, the matlab I use is attached to my virtual machine so it shouldn't be affected by this ? Otherwise I should be able to run it only once.

How much memory is allocated to your virtual machine ? How much memory is each of your sessions taking?

I think I find the problem and you too, i just launch this night only 3 matlab, and one of my process dies unexpectedly without errors.

I looked with top at my processes and 7,1G out of 8G ram where used at this time, and now it's about 5,4G so i think there was a peak this night.

So a question come to my mind why no out of memory exception was triggered ?

Sometimes out of memory messages cannot be written, because the require memory by itself. This rarely happens when a huge array is allocated, but usually when the memory is exhausted in many small pieces. Then finally there is even no memory to create the tiny string for the message anymore.

The standard solutions are:

• Install more RAM
• Use smaller data types if possible, e.g. integer types for indexing or single if the precision is enough
• Stop other applications
• Clear variables if they are not used anymore
• Avoid memory fragmentation caused by omitted pre-allocations
