How to count characters from an imfill Image

I need to count the amount of alphanumerical characters from this image, I have no idea how to do that. Would anyone be able to help get started on this problem? Thanks for the help!

You can use regionprops for the counting the alphanumeric characters as shown below

 I = imread('Your_image.jpg');
 I=rgb2gray(I);
 imshow(I)
 
 % Defining Threshold
 
 th = 100;
 BW = I > th;
 
 % Cropping image
 img = BW(50:end-100,300:end-150);
 imshow(img)
 
 % Applying regionprops
 s = numel(regionprops(img))
