Bar chart with dual x-axis labels (groups)

I use Excel to make bar charts with dual x-axis categories (see attached picture). I would like to automate the charting process in Matlab, but I cannot find a way to add grouped x-axis labels as shown. I have no problem getting the bars to plot, but I'm out of ideas on the XLabels.

Note that I hid the individual bar x-axis labels because it cluttered the chart, so those have all been removed. I'm more interested in comparing groups than individual bars, but being able to see the individual bars is important (a histogram or simpler bar chart summary won't accomplish what I am looking for).

I have heard that this issue is known and currently this feature is not supported. The concerned parties may be investigating further.
