Unfortunately, MATLAB R2017a is not officially supported on Ubuntu 18.04. The supported versions for MATLAB R2017a are Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, 16.04 LTS, and 16.10. However, if you wish to use MATLAB on Ubuntu 18.04, you might consider installing MATLAB R2018b, which is compatible with Ubuntu 18.04.
