Matlab restarting Windows 10

Running Matlab 2017b update 3 under heavy load (parfor on 90% of cores, RAM near maximum) in Windows 10 (both intel and AMD systems), I will randomly get the "Windows Restarting" prompt (from Windows, as if I had clicked the restart option in the taskbar) and unless I ctrl-alt-del immediately, Windows will indeed restart. It doesn't happen every time I run a particular script, e.g. the same script will often complete successfully on one run and restart windows on the next.
If I manage to catch the restart and cancel it, when I return from the task manager splash screen, Matlab will have closed, no warning messages, just gone, as is all data.
I assume this is a result of outstripping system resources, but it is annoying. I would almost prefer a BSOD because at least then Windows is aware that something untoward happened. I've never seen this behavior running other resource intense applications.
The 2 systems it happens on:
1. ASUS X99 Deluxe II, i7-6950x, 32GB DDR4 RAM, Samsung 950 pro M.2 512GB SSD, Titan V.
2. ASUS Prime X399A, Threadripper 1950X, 32GB DDR4 RAM, Samsung 950 pro M.2 512GB SSD, GTX 1080.
At the very least, should make a compelling case for buying a bunch more RAM.
Thanks in advance for any insights.
Lou.
