Why do I receive a jvm.dll error when installing MATLAB on my Windows computer?

When running the MATLAB installer, I get the following error message:
The installer could not start the JVM.

The error you are seeing can be caused by the following:
Permissions
It could be that you do not have sufficient privilege to run the installer from the current directory. Try running the installer from a different directory such as C:\TEMP\ or any other public directories. 
Security/Anti-Virus Software
Any third party security software can cause issues with the installation process. You can either temporarily disable any security software or boot into Safe Mode with Networking and go through the installation process once more.
