Image reconstruction with averaging filters

I am trying to reconstruct images for change detection which contain some vertical line spaces (periodic pattern) / some random pattern and some open areas.I have some ideas for creating a vertical filter with masks which works well for the periodic pattern.ex mask = ones(9,1); mask(3:7)=0; ref1 = conv2(tt,mask,'same')/4; Is there a simple method for creating a filter for the random pattern and gradient regions.
