Why does r2016b fail to start on macosx sierra?

After installation r2016b starts and works. After quitting the app, it will not restart. The splash screen is shown and then disappears with no error messages.

I see that you're not able to start MATLAB R2016b on Mac OS X Sierra. See the following link on common startup issues with MATLAB on Macs:
