Comparing the temporal evolution of two signals

Hello everybody, I need to find a way to compare the difference between the temporal evolution of two acoustic signals.

For the moment I don't want to focus on the spectrum but on the envelope. So basically I would like to have a measure indicating how much the envelope profile of two signals differs. Would it be a good idea to extract the envelope of the two signals and comparing it?
