Anything that is measurable in an image is grounds for retrieval. Mean, median, variance, percentage of occurrence of a named color, number of ellipses with a given eccentricity, texture properties...
Anything that is deducible in an image is grounds for retrieval. Estimated gender, estimated ethnicity, estimated species, estimated age, estimated brand, estimated location, estimated personal identity, deduced clan from tartan, estimated action taking place, estimated emotion, and so on.

Just search for CBIR (content based image retrieval). There are lots of strategies - too many to list here. Even explaining one for you would be too much of a chore for me.
