When I run the Update Installer for R2018b through R2022b, I get the error "free up disk space on your computer before continuing" because I do not have enough space in my temp directory. How can I change the temp directory used by the Update Installer?

The Update Installer reads the temp directory from java.io.tmpdir system property, and not from the TMP or TMPDIR variable. You can set the temp directory used by the Update Installer by modifying the _JAVA_OPTIONS environment variable. The commands for doing so are slightly different on Windows and Linux/Mac.
Windows:
set _JAVA_OPTIONS=-Djava.io.tmpdir=\new\tmp\dir
Linux/Mac:
export _JAVA_OPTIONS=-Djava.io.tmpdir=/new/tmp/dir
