character recognition

i want to hand write something, be able to scan it into matlab, and after ive defined my own ascii table using spline polynomials, i want matlab to analyize the image and be able to output what i have handwritten on a plot. i am new to matlab and dont know where to begin..

Pick your favorite algorithm from section 23.4 here http://iris.usc.edu/Vision-Notes/bibliography/contentschar.html#OCR,%20Document%20Analysis%20and%20Character%20Recognition%20Systems and then code it up. Good luck.
