Why do I get an error when I try to run a viewlet demo from the Help Browser?

I am unable to run any of the demos that are powered by viewlets. When I click on "Run this demo", a browser window opens that says "MATLAB Demos" as expected, but another window opens with one the following error messages:
ERROR: alt="Your browser is unable to read the Viewlet (the applet tag is not recognized).
" Please refer to the browser specifications in order to watch the Viewlet.
or
ERROR: The HTML page has been modified

The reason you cannot view the applet is because you need a Java plug-in so that your browser can run the applet. One way to obtain this is by downloading and installing a Java Runtime Environment (JRE). You can find one as a free distribution from Sun at the following URL:
