Operating States
1. Switch ON:
  • Inductor stores energy
  • Diode is reverse-biased
  • Load is powered by the capacitor
2. Switch OFF:
  • Inductor releases energy to load through diode
  • Capacitor charges
  • Load receives current from inductor and capacitor
Applications
  • Battery-powered devices (when voltage can vary)
  • LED drivers
  • Power management in embedded systems
  • Renewable energy systems (solar, fuel cells)
Advantages
  • Can both step up and step down voltage
  • Simple topology
  • Efficient over a wide voltage range
