f is a matrix image converted to new matrix image by using mat2gray function. i want to know how elements of new matrix formed ?

i got f = [1 2;3 4] gives me f = 1 2;3 4 when i use mat2gray(f) funtion it yields result ans = 0 0.3333;0.6667 1.0000 anyone can tell me how this happen?
