Try this

    file = dir('*.xl*');    %dir excel
    filename = file.name;   %filename_excel
    excel_path = [pwd, '\', filename];  %get the path of the excel
    [ndata, headertext] = xlsread(excel_path);  %read the data from the excel
    save('a.mat','ndata'); %save to a.mat

No sir , it wont work. Whichever XLS file u convert,

just try

whos -file filename.mat

you can see both filename.xls and filename.mat not same.

Better goto MATLAB. Go to workspace. Click on that . RIght corner down arrow, then click 'new'. And fill features values. And save workspace. It give filename.mat file.
