Making a video out of still images without using a avi file.

I have about 540 images (.png files) and I need to convert them into a video file for presentation. I was able to make a .avi file using VideoWriter(), but the video file is massive (1.5GB) and I'd like to get it down in size. It's just a bunch of scatter plots so I'm not sure why it's so big.
