working out the vertices of polyhedra

I am trying to work out the vertices of various sized polyhedra. I want equally spaced points on a sphere of radius one (ie going from -1 to 1 in all three directions; x y and z) any ideas on how to do that. Some of the downloadable scripts seem to work the other way around where you must supply the vertices first and then the polyhedron will be constructed.
