How do I stop the "PLOTS" tab from getting hung up?

I frequently use the variable editor to view the data. For some reason, whenever i have a variable selected the plots ribbon constantly updates, causing matlab to get hung up. To stop it, I have to quit matlab and restart. It is extremely irritating. How do I fix this?

I would recommend upping the Java Heap Space as a first step to any sluggishness issues.
Home Tab->Preferences->General->Java Heap Space.
Slide it up and restart MATLAB.
