How do I extract just the text from an XML file?

So I know of the function xmlread, but it goes into nodes and trees and I have no clue what those are, I don't know Java. I just know a bit of C and MATLAB. So, is this the only way to get just the text from the xml document into MATLAB, or is there any other way? If not, where can I learn about nodes and trees etc. from scratch so I have an idea how to work with xmlread?
