How to create low contrast phantom for reconstruction simulation.

Can I use phantom(E,N) to create such a phantom? If so, please give me an example of E. And explain how the matrix E works. Thanks.

I've tried to increase the intensity of the whole background and lower the intensity of ellipses. It does give me a low contrast phantom, but I cannot reconstruct from its projection.
