how can i rescale ths axes of 2-D graph so the x-axis and the y-axis coordinates are: -4,-2,0,2,4?

Are you expecting this:

figure;
xlim([-4 4])
ylim([-4 4])

yes but without -3,-1,1,3 on the axes

then goto Edit -> Axes Properties -> then select X axis then click More Properties in Axis Rulers -> Xtick delete data(i.e. -3 -1 1 3). Repeat the same from instead of X axis, Use Y axis
