Writing Excel files with merged cells from Matlab

I'd like to write a matrix into an XLS file from Matlab, but I;d like certain cells to be merged. I know there activex commands for that, but I don't want these commands to be performed in real-time in Excel, instead I just want to have a script that writes this spreadsheet (with merged cells) as an XLS file.
