finding eigenvectors matching to eigenvalues

hello,
I hope it's fine that I ask this question here, couldn't find the information on the site. when I use the following function:
[V,D,W] = eigs(Matrix);
may I assume that the first column in V
c1 = V(1,:);
correspond to the first eigenvalue in D i.e. D(0,0) and so on? it sound logical that it will be so, but I want to make sure.
Thank you!

The respective Eigenvalues would be diag(D)
v1 = V(:,1) ; e1 = D(1,1) ;
v2 = V(:,2) ; e2 = D(2,2) ; % and so on
