Overwrite old version when installing new one

I'm aware that it is possible to have more than one version of MATLAB at the same time, but when installing a new version it seems to be the default that you keep the old one. Is there a simple way to avoid that, i.e. have the new version automatically overwrite or remove the old one?
I'm relying heavily on the API and every time I update MATLAB it get's confused about which version of MATLAB to connect to. Uninstalling the old version afterwards seems to remove all references to any version of MATLAB so the API stops working and fails to recognize that MATLAB is installed on the machine at all.
-It's a win64 installation of MATLAB

When you install a new version of MATLAB, previous versions are not overridden by default.
