Identifying colored sectors in an image and connecting them...

I was trying to identify the certain types of coloured sectors in an image and connect them with lines.
Example: (an image is attached.) This image was generated after thresholding (pixel color: 1 & 250) a greyscale image.
As it is shown, there are basically two types of 'white' patches, vertically extended and horizontally extended. Series of each is highlighted in red and blue resp. I need to identify all such series and replace them with a line connecting them vertically and horizontaly resp. The purpose of connecting them with a line is to count the no. of lines in vertical and horizontal directions and find the distance between two successive lines.
Please help. Thanks in advance.
