Image segmentation: how to separate overlapped objects

Hi guys, I have an image which is relatively noisy as you can see in the attached file. I have used region growing method to separate the background with the foreground to create a binary image. The problem is there are still some small parts of the background still remaining.

Do you guys have any idea with which method I should use to separate those small parts from the main one?.
