Is there a way to extract map data out of the Matlab mapping toolbox?

I am very uncomfortable with the way matlab mapping setting up everything. I wonder if there is a way I can extract the longitude and latitude of the USA shorelines, and the state boundaries?

Hi Leon,
You can simply use my borders function, which has state boundaries and does not require the Mapping Toolbox.
