how to get residual for regression

Hello I have one question about regression residual. when I obtain the regression , I use : err = immse(X,Y) to get the error. but it is usually different from other people's result. for calculating the error of a regression, should we consider MSE or just standard error and is the code the right one to calculate it in Matlab? Thanks
