Use 'Index' to address the individual images:

 I1 = imread('mri.tif', 'Index', 1);
 I6 = imread('mri.tif', 'Index', 6);
 I11 = imread('mri.tif', 'Index', 11);

To find out the number of subimages:

 x = imfinfo('mri.tif')
 N = numel(x);
