magnitude of coefficients in 1D wavelet packet analysis

I have analysed a 1D signal with wavelet packet toolbox and I obtained the detail and approximation coefficients at each level, see attached image My question is: how is the magnitude of these coefficients are related to the original signal and why some of them higher and the other lower?
