Can Arduino hardware support for Matlab use different libraries such as software serial?

I'm trying to get Matlab to communicate with multiple Arduinos over a network using the RS485 standard. My approach is to use Matlab to control an Arduino and use it to send commands using the software serial library. Is this possible?
