How to save a figure with lots of data points?

Something is wrong. I have 100000 data points, and MATLAB displays the scatter plot within a second without any hesitation. However I cannot save the figure, nor in png nor in eps. MATLAB is busy for hours without any result. And the very strange effect: if I cut the data into subsets, and display them as subplots, there is no problem with the saveas function. Why?

Please post the code, which reproduces the problem. Currently we cannot guess the details.
