Is the Matlab Engine for Python not available on all versions of Matlab?

When I went to follow the install instructions for the Matlab Engine for Python the install instructions said to go to the

matlabroot\extern\engines\python

directory, however this directory does not exist in my version of Matlab. I was therefore unable to install the engine. I have the R2011a Student version, and I was wondering if this engine is only available on newer versions of Matlab? Thanks for the help!
