How to bring a figure to the foreground in Linux

Hi,
On windows I can use:
figure(gcf)
to bring the current figure to the foreground (ie. the topmost window on the screen, in front of the desktop). Unfortunately this doesn't seem to work on Linux. Is there a workaround?
(MATLAB R2014a)
