can matlab be used for controlling a robot through serial communication for any program ?

I want to make a bot perform an algorithm and select the shortest path from one point to another. It would involve saving a map of the paths that the bot would traverse. Can i do this using matlab? I would only be using line follower with ir sensors for the bot to traverse through the required path .
