Convert Subsystem into Referenced Subsystem programmatically?

If I right-click on a subsystem, I can select Subsystem & Model Reference > Convert to > Referenced Subsystem …, press OK, and the subsystem is converted. Is there a way of performing this programmatically, from the command window or a script?

This converts a subsystem to a model reference. I am looking to convert a subsystem to a subsystem reference (introduced in 2019b).
