How can I read from a text file

I have one column with 641 rows. I want to read rows number 1,2,12,22,23 and take the mean of all 5 numbers in these rows. How can I do this?

theMean = (columnVector(1)+columnVector(2)+columnVector(12)+columnVector(22)+columnVector(23))/5;
It's pretty basic - am I missing something?
