Append Data to Excel File

Does anyone have advice on how to append data to the bottom of an excel file (i.e. to an unknown row, in column 1, for example)? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

If the Excel file is not abnormally huge, I would read it in with xlswrite(), append the data to the end of the first column, and then write it back using xlswrite().
