Overview
Discover how to virtually test UAV platforms with variable mass payloads through advanced modeling, simulation, and rapid prototyping workflows. Through a UAV package delivery example, this session will demonstrate scenario simulation, variable mass dynamics modeling, and hardware-in-the-loop testing using open-source autopilot platforms. The scenario simulation will also feature the integration of onboard sensors such as IMU, GPS, Camera, and Lidar, enabling realistic simulation of navigation and perception for autonomous missions. Learn how to validate system performance under changing conditions and streamline the path from simulation to real-world deployment.
Highlights
- Model UAV dynamics, including variable payload masses
- Integrate and simulate onboard sensors (IMU, GPS, Camera, Lidar) into scenario simulation
- Perform mission and scenario testing to evaluate "what if" conditions
- Use simulation to validate system performance
- Rapidly prototype and test with PX4 and ArduPilot autopilots
- Integrate simulation and hardware workflows for faster development cycles

About the Presenter
Eric Hillsberg is a Product Marketing Manager for Aerospace Products at MathWorks. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Aerospace Engineering and a minor in Computer Science. During school, he interned with NASA Ames Research Center to investigate how Inter-Satellite Links and Distributed Extended Kalman Filters could be used to create a Lunar Position, Navigation, and Timing system. While at MathWorks, he has enjoyed creating videos, demos, whitepapers, and more to communicate key technical concepts to Aerospace customers.
