Modernizing System Planning with Forecasted Data Layers in Grid Models
Steffen Ziegler, Eversource Energy
Electrification trends necessitate modern approaches in grid planning to ensure a reliable, efficient, and sustainable energy future.
At Eversource, current initiatives include adopting MATLAB® as a central software development tool for performing data analysis, performing computations, managing simulation results, and modeling grid data. This is critical for performing grid data analytics and managing simulations moving towards 8760-hour (full-year) simulations and the integration with dynamic grid modeling engines.
Additionally, interconnection automation work is in progress to empower developers to identify optimal investment opportunities. Automation eliminates the need for time-consuming manual efforts, enabling rapid forecasting of the expected system impacts when integrating new renewables and loads into the grid. In addition, probabilistic modeling has been established to analyze grid scenarios that are not covered by stand-in scenarios.
