Detailed derivation of Breit-Rabi diagram for alkali-metal atoms is presented. Can be used both by educators and by students
Live script contains both analytical results and numerical simulations of alkali-metal atoms ground state degeneracy splitting due to hyperfine interaction and external static magnetic field. Hyperfine interaction plays a crucial role in experiments in AMO physics as well as electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy for the compounds containing the unpaired s-shell electrons that are sensitive to their local “micro” environment. Detailed derivation of Breit-Rabi equation is presented, including construction of all atomic spin states, starting from the highest weight one.
